Hi Jane, thank you for joining us on Outrageous today.
Can you start by telling us a little about your new book...
My latest release Mustang Wild is a contemporary Western with two characters with their flaws and demons. The heroine Aideen Shannon, is the local bad girl with an undeserved reputation who is less than thrilled to be returning ‘home’ after four years. She is sassy with something to prove and hides her scars behind a veneer of toughness. That stubbornness sets her on a collision course with rancher Bryce Carlisle (I’m a sucker for a tall, dark and handsome alpha) who she shares a complex past. Things never go smoothly as they butt heads and deny their mutual attraction the sparks more than fly, they soar! As if that isn’t the cherry on the cake, someone means Aideen harm and in a hostile town where friends are few, there are plenty of suspects. I had a lot of fun writing these characters and I’d like to probably revisit sometime in the future if I can construct another plot.
Was there something specific that inspired you?
The only thing I could pin point would be the beginning for my love of reading. I’m part of the Harry Potter generation and my love of reading took off when I found out when I could read faster than my mum and have devoured books ever since. As a result I have been writing on and off since the age of 11.
What was the hardest thing about writing this story?
In a nutshell, consistency of voice and being unable to write a straight forward plot line. I write in scenes and somehow stitch them all together. This makes it so easy for plot holes to creep in and I can develop writer’s block very easily. For example the book I’m currently working on, The Bride of Fire has the bare bones of plot but it's fuzzy in the middle and the characters desperately need fleshing out.
Do you have any quirky habits when writing?
Sometimes I see the scenes I’m writing in a musical theatrical style or a musical montage. I get a song that fits a scene or character’s feelings perfectly and I find it hard to translate that awesomeness into words when you can’t couple a book with a sound track. For example Nickleback, ‘Never Again’ fits a perfect part of Aideen back story.
What do you do in your spare time? Any adrenaline-rush hobbies?
Does netball count? I’be a keen netballer since a young age and love the game. But I have tried caving, kayaking, segwaying, abseiling, go karting - whoa may be I’ve done more than I realise. So I’ve tried one or two things but would like to keep adding to my list.
Just for kicks…
Tea or coffee?
Tea! Strange and wonderful teas, my favourite is lemon and honey green tea, which I’ve unfortunately nicknamed my wacky backy tea until I realised it probably wasn’t the appropriate for my office job.
Red or black?
Hmmmm, I have to go with red as I have a stunning red ‘Jessica Rabbit’ type dress hanging in my wardrobe so it might be a bit of a give away.
David Gandy or Chris Hemsworth?
Tough one! Typically I go for tall, dark, handsome and YUM! But there is just something about Chris Hemsworth…. Is this a trick question? Can I have both?
Swimming or mountain climbing?
Haha, I didn't have to pause for this one. Swimming all the way, I just don’t climb. I once did one of those go ape rope jungle things with zip wires. Yes - I’m the one who got stuck on the cargo net and had to be rescued and hoisted up on to the platform with everyone watching.
What do you have coming up next for readers?
At the moment I’m dipping my toe into the fantasy genre and working on a project called ‘The Bride of Fire’, it follows the trials of a Princess in exile who is always the ‘spare’ and never the heir. The challenge with this one is I’m thinking of changing up my writing style as the hero has to be a cold-hearted tool but a sexy redeemable one and I’m not sure I can show that successfully in first person.

Excerpt
"You know what, I've decided to enter the bull riding event and I'll send you a front row ticket." That did it. A man that big should not be able to move that fast but he managed. An arm of iron lifted me off the ground and pinned me against his hip. My ass pointed straight up in the air. He carried me, bringing his hand smartly down on my jeans shaking the dust off. Bryce paused and I twisted around to see what for. Great, he decided to pick up a switch. He pushed me over the rock, tugged my pants round my ankles and leaned over my back to keep me pinned. To add insult to injury, he plucked my knife from my sheath and started to shave it smooth. My own knife for Christ's sake.
"You want to call me on it, Aidie, that's fine but don't forget you might get the lickin' you've been asking for."
"I'm not asking for this!" I snarled wanting to kick and lash out at him but my jeans were wrapped too tight and caged me in. My buttocks twitched as he unexpectedly tapped the end of the switch against my left cheek. Tap, tap, tap. It moved its way down to the back of my thigh. Nothing. I waited a tense heartbeat, when it gently tapped the inside of my thigh I jumped out of my skin. I arched my back trying to buck but his hand kept me down. Cool air hit me between my legs as they snapped apart, the tingling causing my stomach to flutter. My inner muscles clenched and unclenched. The widening of my eyes had nothing to do with the first stroke as it had yet to land. I was getting turned on. The cool breeze licked every forbidden inch of my skin, the warmth of his hand on my back and the sun, it was an overload of sensation and I had revelled in the anticipation of the tapping.
"Sure you have." I hissed as the switch smartly connected in the crease where buttock met thigh. It snapped me rudely back to reality as heat seared along the fine line. I so had a screw loose to think this turned me on even for a second.
Author Bio
When I realised that the world was not hiring for a ‘sarcastic but benign Supreme Ruler of the Universe’ I’ve decided to focus on my passion. By day I work in a UK company’s finance department and by night I become my alter ego Scribble Girl. I have been writing never ending stories since the age of 11 and this all stemmed from my love of reading.
I love reading. Period.
I’m part of the Harry Potter generation and while waiting between books would literally devour any book I could get my hands on. Let’s put it this way J K Rowling has a lot to answer for. I adore that there is no end in sight to where your own imagination can take you. That between the pages of a book you are able to craft enchanted forests and castles, perilous quests, heroes and heroines from thin air. I will admit that I am a sucker for happy endings and will chalk that one up to my Mill & Boon phase.
So now my new goal is to take over the world one book at a time, happy reading!
Fantastic post! Thank you for the contest!
