Chapter One
“Paige, where in the hell did you put the password log book?” Sylvia groaned as she flicked on the computer and the logo for the Shifting Hearts Dating Agency flashed across the screen. The agency had been open for six months, growing a little more every day. Their wall of successful matings and marriages increasing making Sylvia eager to check out her newest applicants and see any potential matches. But she always forgot the password. Either that, or Paige was always changing it.
She bet the latter.
Tricky damned cat shifter.
A descendent of Aphrodite, helping others find love was in Sylvia’s blood. Nothing made her happier. One day she’d find her own swoon-worthy prince charming, but at this point…well, she was content helping others. A tinge of sadness slid in and she firmly booted it away. The right person would come along at the right time, not before. This was her job, her chosen career and damned if she wasn’t going to use her power for helping people. With a push if it required it.
But if she saw that damned incubus, Carter, again, she was going to shove his ass clear out the window. Cheating fucker. He’d get his one day. She had people to help and it didn’t do her much good to think about murder before she’d at least had a cup of coffee. A really big cup too.
Everything here in Cypress Valley, Texas ran toward big and she hoped by setting up business here with the growing shifter population, her profits would start to be too. It was all great being descended from Goddess material, but if you didn’t have the dollars to go with the lifestyle, then it wasn’t so much fun anymore. Time to shake her money maker and get some romance in the air.
She got up from the desk, her new heels making her wince. She hobbled over to the kitchenette area in the back of the office and flicked on the overpriced individual cup coffee maker Paige insisted they buy. Her co-partner stood next to the counter, stuffing the better part of a jumbo blueberry muffin into her mouth.
“Now that is one big muffin.”
She held up a finger and kept on chewing.
“Nice salute there, hun. Cat get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?”
Paige growled around the muffin, her cat shining in her eyes.
“Ewwww. Somebody is grumpy today.” Sylvia rolled her eyes and shook her head. Coffee. Lots of coffee. Then she’d deliberate about food. And passwords. She eyed the flavored pods with distrust, knowing Paige was watching, and selected one that read Hazelnut. She popped it into place like Paige had shown her and hit the start button. A dribble of brown liquid began to flow from the machine and too late she remembered she hadn’t placed a cup below the spigot.
“Shit!” Sylvia scrambled and reached for the nearest mug, shoving it in place. The scalding hot liquid poured over her hand and she let out a yowl.
A choked laugh from across the kitchenette met her ears.
Still munching on her muffin with an innocent smile on her face, Paige grinned and gave a pinky wave.
Bitch. At least that was an improvement over the last finger, she supposed.
Sylvia gazed at her friend with narrowed eyes and ran her hand under the faucet. “That wasn’t nice.”
“Sorry. But you made me almost inhale that one.” Paige snorted into her hand and popped the last of the muffin into her mouth. Not afraid of sporting her brunette curves, Paige was a kitty to be reckoned with, whether it was man or muffin…or modern appliance.
“Ugh.” Sylvia snatched up her cup and marched back to her desk, irritation prickling under her skin. New machines wigged her out. So did computers and newfangled cars. If she got too excited, her goddess tendencies could have adverse side effects to the point where Paige teased her that she must be related to Harry Dresden. At her blank look, she’d sighed and flicked something up on her phone, twisting it so Sylvia could see. “You know. The Dresden Files?” A picture of a book cover covered the screen.
She’d had no earthly idea what her friend was talking about. If it didn’t have vampires or a hot scantily clad shifter, she didn’t bother.
“You need to read more than just smut, girl.”
“Yeah…yeah.”
But what was the point to that?
“Sorry, Syl. The password book’s in the drawer where I always leave it.” Paige maneuvered her way to the desk on heels so high Sylvia didn’t know how she didn’t fall on her impeccably made up face. “And unless you plan on sticking your mouth underneath the pour nozzle, I’d have a cup ready next time.”
“Ha ha.”
Her friend’s blazer and top worked well with the jeans and boots she’d selected for the day. It was raining and knowing her cat shifter partner, she’d rather be curled up in her bed with a pile of blankets than be out and about.
Paige clutched an oversize cup of coffee like it was her lifeline, pausing mid-stride to take a sip. The rest of her may have been spot on but her bleary eyes told a story. Sylvia wasn’t sure she really wanted to ask.
“You okay?”
“Yep.” Paige set the cup down, the milky brown liquid sloshing dangerously close to the rim. “Tried out a new venue last night and I think I found us a whole new segment of the shifter population.”
“Really?” Sylvia grinned, “And where did you go, pray tell?”
Paige glanced around, nibbling her lip. “Is Rafe here?”
“Nope. I haven’t seen your brother yet. Why?”
“Good.” A flash of cat in Paige’s eyes revealed her excitement. “I went to Ventures.”
Sylvia wrinkled her nose. “Where?”
“The new bondage club on Fifth Street. It caters to humans, shifters, and other paranormals.” A smile lit up her eyes and she reached for the coffee again, sitting down with a wince. “They had a kind of open house event and I wanted to check it out to see if there was any potential for us to join forces.”
“And?”
Paige focused on her cup, a secret smile on her lips.
“Did you hurt yourself?”
“Not exactly.”
Sylvia blinked. Oh….So that was how it was.
“So you think we’ll get some clients?”
Paige fidgeted in her chair and fired up her own computer. “You just wait, girlfriend. I have a feeling before the day is out we’ll be seeing something new coming across our desk. Now, where did you put the file on the Jefferson twins? I think I met someone that could give them a run for their money.”

Tyler
Ten years earlier
“Johnson is down. Request immediate assistance.” Tyler scanned the desolate landscape, grimacing as the coppery scent of blood reached his nostrils.
Hot and sweaty, he ducked down against Afghanistan’s crumbling mountain terrain, the scrubby plants doing little to offer camouflage against the enemy. Marc, his best friend and brother in law, hunkered behind a boulder, his eyes focused on the small military outpost on the hillside below, his rifle perched carefully on the rock formation.
He apparently hadn’t moved while Tyler had been gone. His stack of targets was right where he left it. Not that the other man needed visual reminders. He had photographic memory and more kills than anyone in the unit.
They had been following orders to blow the insurgent bastards to kingdom come and find out whatever information they could about their next move. Marc was a sniper where Tyler’s specialty was covert operations. The others in the highly specialized shifter unit were skilled in bomb diffusion and other tactical duties, often leaving Marc and Tyler paired together.
Trenton and Greg were a few clicks away on the other side of the ridge and Dimitris flew in hawk form, filming what he could for their superiors. Only one more day and they were shipping out and Tyler couldn’t be more relieved.
Between the spiders and the uneven terrain, he was ready for this mission to be over. Or at least he had been until he’d read the last letter from Jenny. They’d been together three years but for the last few months their relationship had been strained. Now he knew why.
I’m sorry, Tyler. I’ve met someone else. I wanted to write you before but it just never seemed like the right time.
Right.
I put your things in storage.
Even better. So now he’d have to find a place when he got back, too. The shit was just getting better and better. He trudged forward, a low growl edging up his throat.
Tyler had met Marc in boot camp and when the other man didn’t have a destination on one of his leaves, he brought him home to meet the family. He promptly fell for Tyler’s sister, Sheree, and the rest was history. The happy couple were expecting their first baby and the whole family couldn’t be more excited.
But for now they were here, stuck in the fifth circle of what had to be Hell and he was jealous as fuck that Marc’s tour was coming up soon. His wasn’t too much longer, but then again, his brother-in-law landed into combat first, with him following a month later when things began to heat up. Cat shifters could get into places a normal soldier couldn’t and they took a beating better, too. All they had to do was never get caught and never give the enemy the gift of their bite.
He didn’t plan on kissing any of them either.
“Hey man. Any action?”
“Not much,” Marc replied, swiveling his head in Tyler’s direction. His eyes appeared tired from the strain of the fourteen hour shift. “One truck. That’s it.”
“Damn.” Tyler shook his head. “I forgot to ask earlier. You hear anything from Sheree?”
His sister sent him letters and so did his mother but no one got letters like Marc did.
“Yup.” The exhaustion in his eyes evaporated in an instant. “The baby’s doing great.” He slid a letter out from his pocket and handed something over to Tyler.
“What? I don’t get to read your letter?” Tyler waggled his eyebrow, further smart ass remarks brewing on his lips when he glanced down at the picture in his hand.
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
The tiny form of a premature baby in utero met his eyes and all words evaporated. The only thing he felt was wonder and a whole lot of awe. He could even see the details of the infant’s face.
“It’s the baby. She’s growing so big.”
Marc’s comments brought him out of himself and Tyler blinked. His sister and his best buddy had made this little person. And he was going to be an uncle.
An uncle…
Wow.
“Wait. It’s going to be a girl?”
“Yup.”
“Oh my God, man. You have to be so proud.” Tyler stared at the small form, noting the outline of the tiny hands, arms, and legs. It was a miracle.
“She’s due in a few weeks. Perfect timing for when I get out of this shit box.”
Tyler handed him back the picture, but the image of his niece was burned into his brain. She was perfect. Every part of her.
“Have you guys picked a name yet?”
Marc grimaced. “I think Sheree wants to name her Pepper. Been watching too many Ironman movies again.”
Tyler snorted. “She always did have a thing for that Robert Downey Junior guy.”
“I’ll say.” Marc cocked his head, his attention jolting back to his post, his expression slipping from happy father-to-be into a stone cold killer.
“What is it?”
“Thought I heard something.” Marc aimed the rifle, scanning the base below. “Nothing.”
A scent of something drifted past his nose but before he could react, the scrabble of feet on stone brought Tyler on red alert. He snarled, spinning on his heel, the cat inside of him trying to find a bead on where the intruder was coming in from.
He scented the air but he couldn’t discern anything identifiable. Aggravated, Tyler pressed the comlink in his ear. Someone was out there and it seemed as if they were masking their scent.
“Trenton. Dimitris. Greg. Positions.”
“Status quo.” Two responded simultaneously. Dimitris was still airborne and couldn’t speak.
“We have company here.”
At that moment, a grenade launched over the rock formation, hitting the ground with an audible clink.
“Fuck.” Marc tossed the rifle to the dirt, scooped up the offending object and hurled it back into open air.
Tyler hoped Dimitris had gotten the fuck out of the way. Then again, the hawk was a wily one.
“Come on.” Tyler’s cat growled low in his throat, the hair on the back of his neck rising to attention. His intuition was never wrong, and right now it was going off like a tornado drill. Something wasn’t right and without even realizing it, they had lost their upper hand.

Excerpt:

Rand almost didn’t hear the screams. Floating in his sleeping state, the din of Blackthorn Coven had simply become a part of an ever-present hum, keeping him company as he traveled slowly through time. The new Regent had his hands full, but he had every confidence the man would keep the Coven out of harm’s way and his pledge of honor with the wolves intact.
Virgil had come to him through his bride and at the time, he’d believed the young vampire held the guts and fortitude it would take to lead their coven into the modern world.
Just like his predecessor before him, he’d stepped aside to make room for a new age. Bone weary from a war that never should have been, he’d handed the reins over and locked himself inside the underground sleeping chamber, content to rest. And he hoped, for his soul to mend from all the loss.
It would probably take him a fucking millennia. He would have been content to stay lost in the darkness if not for the haunting eyes of the woman just out of his reach. Even as he walked the halls in his final days, he caught her watching him out of the corner of his eye.
At first he thought she was a ghost, or even worse, the witch who had enraptured his wife with whispers of obscene power. But no. He got no inkling of harm from her. She was nothing like his bride.
Bitter fire burned through him as the memories of his wife’s treachery flitted through his brain. Daughter of the previous Regent, she bowed before no man and by the Gods, he’d foolishly thought she might have grown to love him, instead of the arranged political match their union had started out to be.
Her father, Cornell, would have been ashamed had he been awake to see what she had done to their people. But he slept the sleep of the dead below and he would not disturb him, even for her. Stone by stone, he and Cornell had built this place and by all the gods he’d struggled to make a home away from the ancestral coven back in Europe. And her actions threatened to ruin it all.
Their fates tied in with a lineage of witches that helped Blackthorn Coven rise to the top of vampire society, it would also be the cause of his greatest heartbreak. Finding her in the arms of a witch who delved into blood magic and dealings with demons had forced his hand. So had the bodies of all of their victims, stacked like firewood in a secluded part of the forest. Wolves had been blamed. But he had known the truth.
One frail human girl lay bleeding out on the floor of Melia’s chamber as she fucked the witch, their bodies entwined, green fire swirling around them.
It was obscene, what they had done. So many had died. But no more.
His bride would kill them all to satisfy her lust for power so she and her lover could sit on the throne. Not on his fucking life.
The witch Abel, his second had taken care of, leaving her shackled in the conservatory bound in nullifying chains. But Melia? She was his.
Rand had cornered her in the Great Hall, his court looking on. Abel, his Captain of the Guard stood by, battle worn and bloody, his face a mask of icy rage. “You did this. You brokered a deal with death. And for what?”
Melia raised her chin in defiance, her glossy hair drawn up in an elaborate updo. She swept past the gathering crowd of onlookers, her long black skirts whispering on the stones as turned to face him. “If you see no value to what I have done, then you are a fool.” Her blood red lips curved up in a smile that did not meet her eyes.
The callous disregard for life rankled and his fangs descended in his fury. “You have learned nothing. When you lead, it is you who serves most of all.”
She was a born aristocrat and he frowned, knowing with certainty that she would never and could never see that what she had done was wrong. Legions of his people had been slain by the ensorcelled wolves. It had taken him months to trace back the source and more than a few innocent wolves had died by his hand.
He had risen up as a mercenary, blood and death gaining him rank where others, like his bride, had accepted their royal status as their due. Rand should give the right of her death to Rowark, the wolves Alpha. But he was too busy picking up the pieces of what was left of his pack. They had fought each other, near to the death until a glimpse of his ghostly witch settled his thoughts long enough to stop the madness.
Then he’d seen the truth. She had never fought for anything, but taken to dark magic to suit her purposes and that he could not abide.
Melia shrugged. “We are meant to rule. They were born to serve.”
“Rule what? A sea of bones? You’ve destroyed everything this Coven held dear. The humans in its care. Our brothers the wolves. And for what?”
“Power,” she hissed, her eyes bright with the cursed green light he’d come to know too well. “It is our birthright.”
“Not yours. Not anymore.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
He seized her unceremoniously around the wrist and dragged her, protesting to the solarium. Dawn approached, and God willing, the end to his Coven’s torment. One demon had been cast down this night but the other…she stood in front of him, daring him to act.
Melia took in the body of her lover and gave a mournful cry, fighting him as he pushed her forward. His stomach twisted as he stalked past the charred body of the witch. The stench almost unbearable, he turned to his bride and reached for the shackles.
“What have you done? Have you lost what wits you have left?” She cried out, fighting him.
“I’ll do it.” Abel stepped forward, blade in hand.
Rand shook his head. “No. This duty is mine and mine alone.” He jerked Melia forward, bile rising in the back of his throat at the thought of what he was about to do.  He thrust her toward the holding chains embedded in the earth and closed the first iron band around her delicate wrist.
She would have them all destroyed to suit her vanity. And there was only one remedy for that.
“You’ll pay for this, Rand. Do you hear me?” Melia squirmed in his grasp as he fastened the last shackle closed. She fell to her knees in a puddle of black silk, cursing at him and jerking at the chains.
Dawn threatened, the bonds of the night urging him back into the shadows. The others had fled the solarium, no doubt to spread their vitriol through the court. Only Abel remained, his expression determined.
“My lord. You must retire.”
“I am aware.” His gaze traveled once more over Melia.
“I’ll leave you, then.” Abel spun on his heel and vanished into the gloom of the hallway, his movements tight with anger.
Rand nodded and turned his attention back to the situation at hand. Would that his heart felt more than pity. He wanted to love her but time after time, she turned him away, choosing instead her quest for power.
“May your next life bring you peace.”
“I hate you,” she spat in his direction, the glow of her eyes matching the luminous green hue of the stone glittering from the amulet at her breast. How much of the witch fire had she taken in? Or that of the demon?
It didn’t matter. In a short while it would be over, her body a pile of ash.
Striding forward, he tore a piece of fabric from her gown, the sound of ripping fabric harsh in the silence.
“What are you doing?”
“Ending this.” Rand yanked the amulet from her neck, burying it in the scrap of fabric. As soon as his hand wrapped around the necklace, his stomach gave a violent lurch and the urge to thrust the unnatural piece from him was almost too powerful to ignore.
Gods.
The blade at his side grew warm in reaction to the dark magic.
What would it have been like to wear that loathsome thing next to his flesh, he wondered and then put it out of his mind. The image of a being swathed in a darkness more terrible than the deepest bowels of the pit flashed behind his mind’s eye and for a moment he knew fear.
Melia struggled, her chains clinking against the stone. Her wrists bloody, she reached for him, a snarl on her lips. “This isn’t over. He’ll come for you and take his rightful place.”
A bitter laugh burst from his lips. “Who will, Melia? Who besides you would dare?”
The first rays of dawn crept across the stone floors and Rand stiffened, not caring what her answer was.
“You’ll find out one day. And by then it will be too late.” Her laughter followed Rand as he stalked into the shadows of the hall. He pulled the door shut behind him, the higher windows of the solarium now just beginning to capture the sun’s poisonous rays, pushing the light closer to where he stood.
Melia’s dying shrieks followed him into the cool darkness. Still they haunted him, twisting with dreams to make them just as real now as they had been in the past.
Visions of unrest drifted through his subconscious and he shifted within the confines of his bed chamber, the stirrings of hunger tearing at him. He forced them back, irritation at his body’s needs making him cross. There was no part of the world he wanted anything to do with.
Naught but one.
It started a week ago. He’d begun to dream of a woman. At first, he hadn’t understood the connection, but as he followed her in his mind’s eye, his gaze located the cause. His dagger.
The first time she touched it at the strange fair and the magic flowing through her veins, dark and decadent but still strangely pure. He wanted her, his cock hardening at the thought of her pliant lips pressed against his. As the connection between them grew, he showed her visions of his past.
At first, he thought it a trick set upon him by Melia’s demon but as he watched her from his dreams, he saw her for her true nature. She’d been holding his blade the first time she’d stumbled into his reality and the link to the knife at his side made the spelled jewel dance in its setting.
In his slumber, he thought of her, reaching now for the blade that had been with him for centuries. Somehow, it had been displaced. Anger that someone would dare to disturb his resting chamber to take what few personal articles he’d taken with him into his rest sparked a rage that awakened his blood lust, leading him in and out of sleep, restless dreams making him edgy.
But first he needed to find the woman.
Vulnerable. Giving. And, it seemed, a witch.

Wednesday on Thursday: Wickedly wordy

I am fascinated by words. Their origins, the way we use them and the power they have. Words are, without doubt, the most powerful weapons on earth. Used thoughtlessly, they can cause great hurt and harm; break hearts, minds and start wars. Used well, and the results can be beyond rewarding.

My kinky novella, Wednesday on Thursday was born from my belief in the power of words and from a curiosity I have in the phenomena that is human sexual behaviour. What could happen, I wondered, if someone became obsessed with how individuals react to certain words when used in certain situations? Certain erotic situations.

I won’t pretend that this concept wasn’t a hell of a challenge. The idea remained neglected and scribbled in one of my many notebooks for months before I worked out how to deliver it. I couldn‘t simply write about someone who spent hours sat on the edge of a bed listing off kinky words to someone in a state of undress.

I needed a story.
Something different.

I wanted a way to make the words we associate with sexual activity more interesting and erotically charged than they already are...and I wanted those words to be delivered in a manner that was accessible and understood by everyone- before I twisted it.

And then I saw him.

There was a man sat in the corner of my local coffee shop. He had a very particular sort of smile on his face as he bent over his newspaper, and espresso in one hand, and a pen in the other. There was something about him that told me his mind was full of images that had nothing at all to do with the newspapers crossword he’d started to do.

His expression, the strong smell of coffee, and his partly completed crossword, started something snowballing in my imagination...
Words turn me on. Intelligence turns me on even more...

I immediately returned to my notebook and asked myself what might happen if a man with a fascination for reactions to words orchestrated his ideas through a serious of experiments. Experiments conducted via crossword puzzles and quizzes.
Suddenly I had a hero who was crossword puzzle freak- a man consumed with discovering how erotic words make women tick.

Blurb

There are rumours that the coffee guy has “a thing” about words.

Shrugging off her friend’s concern about the way the man in the cafe stares at her every lunch hour, Wednesday can’t see how his love of words could possibly be hazardous.

The fact is, Wednesday rather enjoys being the centre of an attractive man’s undivided attention. His dark blue eyes alone have provided her with many delicious erotic fantasies, a welcome distraction from the pressures of the real world and a dull job.

It’s totally harmless...

...until there’s an accident with a cup of coffee.

After soaking Wednesday with a hot latte, the coffee guy’s attention suddenly becomes far more enticing—and dangerous.

Drawn into a bizarre world of human behavioural research, where crosswords are used to initiate sexual experiments, Wednesday finds herself driven, not by a desire to further scientific research, but by the need to be rewarded for her hard work by the coffee guy’s captivating research assistant.

A stunning redhead by the name of Thursday...

Sat at her usual table, stirring a spoonful of sugar into her latte, Wednesday began her daily cycle of speculation. Who was he? Did he come into the café at other times and fixate on other customers? What was going through his mind while he observed her so intently? Why didn’t it bother her?

Most men noticed Wednesday’s chest first; some opted for checking out her arse. A rare few went further with their assessment, and engaged her in conversation before they tried their luck.

But not this man; the one she referred to as the coffee guy.

With a double shot espresso in his hand, the first time he’d set eyes on Wednesday, the coffee guy had started with an unashamed assessment of her chest, then, over a period of several weeks, studied her from the top of her head to the toes of her shoes.

Instinct told Wednesday to avoid the coffee guy at all costs. The way he examined her with his enquiring midnight blue eyes was so unsettling. And yet...

Whenever Wednesday walked into the cafe she frequented during her lunch break, the coffee guy would be there. From the moment she took her first step through the door, his focus would shift from his drink to the queue of customers, where it would become fixed upon her.

She thought she’d imagined it at first, but as time had gone by, Wednesday had become increasingly convinced it really was her he was watching.

It had crossed her mind that maybe she should be scared, that this man could be some sort of voyeuristic stalker. But Wednesday didn’t feel threatened; just intrigued and aroused, although she wasn’t sure why.

Only once had he spoken to her.

A swapped lunch break with her friend Carol had placed Wednesday behind the coffee guy in the queue.

Her coffee had already been in her hand when he’d stepped back and accidentally knocked into her, spilling the beverage down her front in a breathtaking cascade of wet heat.

Wednesday had watched helplessly as the liquid seeped through her black shirt, ran down her purple pencil skirt, and travelled on an unstoppable route into her boots.

Too stunned to talk, she’d tugged the wet material of her shirt outwards, not caring that she might be giving the world a generous view of her cleavage.

‘Wednesday, are you okay?’ The barista behind the counter had rushed to her side, pushing a wad of paper napkins into her hands. ‘You can use the staffroom if you like. There are spare T-shirts in there. Help yourself.’

Feeling like an unwilling contestant in a wet T-shirt competition, Wednesday had rushed towards the door marked Staff Only.

It was only once she’d walked into the staffroom that she realised the man who’d caused the accident had followed her.

‘Your name is Wednesday?’

‘Yes.’

‘I find that rather pleasing.’

Then, without a word of apology for ruining her clothes and potentially scalding her, the coffee guy had disappeared.

All Wednesday had been left with was the lingering blaze of his navy blue eyes, which had heated her flesh just as much as the spilt drink...

All this has word-ish thinking makes me wonder what your favourite sexy word is?

I have a few – but the one that really ‘does it’ for me is unbuttoning.  Unzipping is a close second- and I rather love the word please – said in the right way you understand!
